India is all set to celebrate 75 years of its independence on August 15. Here’s everything you need to know about the history and significance of the day. The struggle for freedom was long and tiring; witnessing the sacrifices of many freedom fighters who laid down their lives for their country and fellow citizens.  This day honors our freedom fighters, the history of our country, its culture and the achievements of the nation as a whole.

It also reminds every Indian citizen of the dawn of a new beginning of an era of liberation from the clutches of British colonialism for more than 200 years. The Indian independence movement began during World War I and was led by Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi. 

The Indian Independence Bill was introduced in the British House of Commons on 4 July 1947 and was passed within a fortnight. It marked the end of more than 200 years of British rule on 15 August 1947.  Many leaders played significant roles in India’s freedom struggle, including Mahatma Gandhi, Jawaharlal Nehru, Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, Bhagat Singh, Chandra Shekhar Azad, Subhas Chandra Bose. , and many others.

India’s Independence Day is celebrated as a public holiday across the country. It reminds us of the many sacrifices our freedom fighters made for the freedom movement and to gain independence from British rule. The country’s history is marked by many incidents of reprisals and uprisings led by freedom fighters, which eventually drove out the British and forced Lord Mountbatten, then the Viceroy of India, to liberate the country from colonial rule on 15 August 1947. However, this day also marked the partition of British-ruled India into two countries – India and Pakistan.

Independence Day is marked by hoisting of tricolor or tiranga, parade, cultural events and singing of patriotic song by citizens. 

On 15 August 1947, India’s first Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru hoisted the Indian national flag over the Lahore Gate of the Red Fort in Delhi. It is a tradition followed by every Prime Minister with a State of the Nation address since then.
