A Large Fire Engulfs Boat, Buildings, Vehicles At The Boatyard

MATTAPOISETT, Mass. – Several boats, buildings and vehicles were destroyed by a large fire at a Massachusetts shipyard on Friday.

Aerial video taken by WCVB-TV showed several boats and vehicles at the Mattapoisett shipyard either burned or engulfed in flames. Firefighters from across the region, including as far away as Providence, Rhode Island, about 30 miles away, responded to the blaze.

People who answered the phones at the Mattapoisett Fire and Police Departments said no one was available for comment. It was not clear if anyone was injured.

The fire area was part of a weather service warning Friday of increased fire risk due to dry conditions and high winds. It sent a plume of thick black smoke across southeastern Massachusetts that could be seen for miles.

The National Weather Service said on Twitter that its radar detected “what is most likely a smoke plume” in Mattapoisett.

Several other people posted pictures and videos of the fire and smoke on social media.

Mattapoisett Boatyard’s website says it has been a family marina since 1962, serving primarily recreational boaters and having the capacity to store up to 150 vessels during the summer that are not in use or for sale.
